Amalia da Piedade Rebordão Rodrigues (Lisbon, July 1st, 1920 - Lisbon, October 6, 1999) was a Portuguese singer and actress, considered the epitome of Fado. Commonly hailed as the voice of Portugal, she is one of the brightest singers of the twentieth century. She is buried in the National Pantheon, as one of the greatest Portuguese people to have ever lived. She became known worldwide as the Queen of Fado and due to the importance this genre holds in Portuguese culture, she was regarded by many as one of its best ambassadors. She appeared on several television programs around the world, where she not only sang Fado and other traditional Portuguese folk music, but also contemporary songs (beginning the so-called fate-song) and even some foreign music (French, American, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian). She made an outstanding contribution to the history of Fado, a genre that was originally introduced to use the words of the great Portuguese poets in music. Her voice is worthy of some of the greatest poets and lyricists including her contemporaries such as David Mourão-Ferreira, Pedro Homem De Mello, José Carlos Ary Dos Santos, Manuel Alegre and Alexandre O'Neill.
